Shobha Gurtu was a doyen in her own right, one of the most magnificent singers of the
thumri style (
gayaki). This legend known to the world as the queen of thumri, was born in 1925 in Belgaum. Having trained initially under her mother, Menakabai Shirodkar, a dancer of high repute, she went on to learn finer details of Hindustani classical music from Ustad Nathan Khan.
Shobha Gurtu trained in the pure classical system but soon showed greater interest in light classical forms such as
thumri, dadra, chaiti etc. Gifted with a rich and earthy voice, her vocal style was well suited to light classical music. She developed this to utmost perfection.
This artiste par excellence was honoured with numerous awards and accolades in appreciation of her contribution to music. These included the prestigious Sangeet Natak Academy Award in 1989 and the coveted Padma Bushan among others.
Shobha Gurtu passed away in 2004 and left behind a legacy and treasure house of unforgettable and sublime music. Her voice will linger in our memories forever.
